Formation of Planetary Nebula Lobes by Jets

چکیده

I conduct an analytical study of the interaction of jets, or a collimated fast wind (CFW), with a previously blown asymptotic giant branch (AGB) slow wind. Such jets (or CFWs) are supposedly formed when a compact companion, a main sequence star or a white dwarf, accretes mass from the AGB star, forms an accretion disk, and blows two jets. This type of flow, which is thought to shape bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe), requires 3-dimensional gas dynamical simulations, which are limited in the parameter space they can cover. By imposing several simplifying assumptions, I derive simple expressions which reproduce some basic properties of lobes in bipolar PNe, and which can be used to guide future numerical simulations. I quantitatively apply the results to two proto-PNe. I show that the jet interaction with the slow wind can form lobes which are narrow close to, and far away from, the central binary system, and which are wider somewhere in between. Jets that are recollimated and have constant cross section can form cylindrical lobes with constant diameter, as observed in several bipolar PNe. Close to their source, jets blown by main sequence companions are radiative; only further out they become adiabatic, i.e., they form high-temperature lowdensity bubbles that inflate the lobes. This implies that radiative cooling must be incorporated in numerical codes intended to study the formation of lobes in PNe. Collimated Fast Winds in Wide Binary Progenitors of Planetary Nebulae

We discuss the formation of planetary nebulae (PNe) having a pair of lobes, or multi-lobes, in their inner region surrounded by an elliptical or spherical shell or halo. Both elliptical and bipolar PNe are considered; when the lobes are much smaller than the main elliptical shell, the PN is termed elliptical PN, while when the lobes are the main structure of the nebula, the PN is termed bipolar...

Bubbles in Planetary Nebulae and Clusters of Galaxies: Jet Bending

We study the bending of jets in binary stellar systems. A compact companion accretes mass from the slow wind of the mass-losing primary star, forms an accretion disk, and blows two opposite jets. These fast jets are bent by the slow wind. Disregarding the orbital motion, we find the dependence of the bending angle on the properties of the slow wind and the jets. Bending of jets is observed in p...

The Shaping of the Red Rectangle Proto-planetary Nebula

I argue that the slowly expanding biconical structure of the Red Rectangle−a nebula around the post asymptotic giant branch binary stellar system HD 44179−can be formed by intermittent jets blown by the accreting companion. The bright biconical structure of the Red Rectangle nebula can be understood to be composed of a multiple double-ring system. In the proposed shaping process, one among seve...

The physical structure of the point - symmetric and quadrupolar planetary nebula NGC 6309

Aims. We analyse the point-symmetric planetary nebula NGC 6309 in terms of its three-dimensional structure and of internal variations of the physical conditions to deduce the physical processes involved in its formation. Methods. We used VLA-D λ3.6-cm continuum, ground-based, and HST-archive imaging as well as long slit highand low-dispersion spectroscopy. Results. The low-dispersion spectra in...

Precessing Collimated Outflows in the Planetary Nebula Ic 4846

We present [N ii] and Hα images and high resolution long–slit spectra of the planetary nebula IC4846, which reveal, for the first time, its complex structure and the existence of collimated outflows. The object consists of a moderately elongated shell, two (and probably three) pairs of collimated bipolar outflows at different orientations, and an attached circular shell. One of the collimated p...
